Steckborn lies north of the ridge of the lake on the shore of Untersee between Stein am Rhein and Konstanz. The intact small town of medieval origin is one of Switzerland's sites worthy of protection (ISOS). On 21 December 2015, the old town was surprised by a fire overnight. The flames left a large gap. Three properties were partially or completely destroyed. Now the building gap is to be closed again.
It is proposed to build three new houses including courtyard buildings. The structuring of the new building volumes is the central tool for harmoniously integrating the new buildings into the small-scale historic structure of the old town. Despite the same construction method and almost the same spatial programme, this design approach results in three individual houses that, in their diversity, fit into the historically evolved heterogeneity of the old town.
All houses combine solid construction and timber construction, which is a reference to the traditional construction method of the historic surroundings. While the base level is concrete and brick, the upper floors are made of wood. The continuous concrete base has a connecting effect, while the composition of plastered surfaces and shingles has a structuring effect.
